Taping & Mudding in the Black Hills, SD

Hanging is only half the battle. Tape and compound are what turn a field of seams into invisible, paint-ready surfaces. Our taping process follows a proven multi-coat sequence that prevents the cracking and ridging so many DIYers and rushed crews produce.

The Multi-Coat Process

  1. 1First coat (tape coat): Paper tape embedded in joint compound, pressed firmly and wiped flush. No air pockets, no bubbles.
  2. 2Second coat (fill coat): Wider spread with thicker compound to fill the tape depression and feather edges.
  3. 3Third coat (skim coat): Even wider feathering with thinner compound for a smooth, invisible transition.
  4. 4Sand & inspect: After the final coat cures, we hand-sand with 120–150 grit under a pole light that reveals every ridge, divot and tool mark before paint goes on.
  5. 5Level 5 finish (optional): A full skim coat over the entire surface — essential for bright colors, glossy finishes, or critical lighting angles.
